BAJ express­es indig­na­tion and protests against Kat­siary­na Andrejeva’s sen­tence

In addi­tion to the pre­vi­ous sen­tence of two years, which was sup­posed to end in Sep­tem­ber, the jour­nal­ist was sen­tenced to 8 years in prison on trea­son charges.

The Belaru­sian Asso­ci­a­tion of Jour­nal­ists con­sid­ers the ver­dict as a judi­cial pun­ish­ment of our col­league for express­ing her opin­ion and per­form­ing pro­fes­sion­al jour­nal­is­tic work.

The case was con­sid­ered in cam­era which con­ceals even the basic cir­cum­stances of the accu­sa­tion against the jour­nal­ist from the pub­lic.

BAJ deems this ver­dict as undis­guised per­son­al per­se­cu­tion. We call on the com­pe­tent state author­i­ties to imme­di­ate­ly can­cel the sen­tence.
