    Imprisoned journalists should not be forgotten: Belarusian and Lithuanian journalists took part in solidarity action on May 3

    On World Press Free­dom Day, the Belaru­sian Asso­ci­a­tion of Jour­nal­ists and the Lithuan­ian Jour­nal­ist Union held a sym­bol­ic action for the release of Belaru­sian polit­i­cal pris­on­ers who worked in the media sphere. The sol­i­dar­i­ty action took place in Luk­iškės Prison in Vil­nius.

    Solidarity Marathon for Imprisoned Belarusian Journalists held in Canada

    The solidarity marathon, initiated by BAJ in May 2023, reached North America. Representatives of the global network for the protection and promotion of freedom of expression, IFEX, held a rally near Toronto City Hall. They came out with portraits of imprisoned Belarusian journalists. Thus, despite censors and dictators’ efforts, the truth thrives around the world.

    The marathon in solidarity with imprisoned journalists continues. This time the campaign initiated by BAJ was supported by Australian journalist Steve Cannаnе, who now lives in London. He heads the European bureau of the ABC television network.

    Media workers from the far-off continent joined the BAJ Solidarity Marathon in support of the imprisoned Belarusian journalists. The Australian Media, Entertainment, and Arts Alliance (MEAA) showed their support for the campaign launched in May from Vilnius.

    Belarusian media workers gathered in Batumi central square with portraits of imprisoned journalists

    Independent Belarusian journalists who had to flee their country to avoid persecution and now reside in Batumi, Georgia, organized a solidarity event in support of their colleagues who are incarcerated in Belarus on political grounds. After the action, they had a meeting with the Chairman of the Belarusian Association of Journalists to discuss journalistic work and life in Georgia.

    Well-known journalist, cultural critic, and public figure Pavel Mazheika received a 6-year prison sentence. His colleagues carried out a campaign in solidarity with him in different countries. They took pictures with his image along with the message ‘Journalism is not a crime’.
