Aliaksandr Klaskouski: Fundraising for Repatriation and Funeral Costs
Aliaksandr Klaskouski (Jr.) was the son of well-known Belarusian journalists Aliaksandr and Liudmila Klaskouski. On June 4, 2025, Aliaksandr suddenly passed away. “We don’t know all the details. We would very much like to bury him in Belarus, but we’re not sure how realistic that is,” wrote his sister Olga Klaskouskaya.
In 2010, dressed in a police uniform, he took part in a protest against the falsification of election results. A photo from that protest—Aliaksandr in uniform standing face-to-face with riot police — became the one of iconic images of the “Ploshcha 2010” movement.
He was arrested on the night of December 21, 2010, beaten, and charged with organizing and participating in mass riots. On May 26, 2011, he was sentenced to 5 years in a high-security prison. He served his sentence in Shklov Penal Colony No. 17. He was released under a “pardon”, although he had refused to write a clemency petition to Lukashenko. He was recognized as a political prisoner.
After the escalation of repression in 2020, Aliaksandr and his family were forced to go into hiding abroad. In 2024, he emigrated to the United States with his wife and three children.
On June 4, 2025, Aliaksandr suddenly passed away, presumably from a heart attack—he was found unconscious by neighbours. The final cause of death will be determined by an autopsy. He was 46 years old.
We are launching this fundraiser at the request of Aliaksandr’s family to cover the costs of repatriating his body to Belarus and other funeral-related expenses.
