    Authorities seize and sell apartment of journalist convicted in absentia for “extremism”

    This includes some of the prop­er­ty seized from Hrod­na jour­nal­ist Uladz­imir Khilmanovich. Accord­ing to a court deci­sion, the prop­er­ty will be sold at auc­tion to com­pen­sate for the sub­stan­tial fine imposed on Khilmanovich.

    Major release: 250 political prisoners freed in Belarus, including key journalists

    Fol­low­ing the March 19 vis­it to Min­sk by John Coale, U.S. pres­i­den­tial envoy, Belaru­sian author­i­ties announced the release of 250 polit­i­cal pris­on­ers. Of these, 15 peo­ple were tak­en to Lithua­nia the same day, while 235 remain in Belarus. Infor­ma­tion about the release of the lat­ter is still being con­firmed.

    Belaru­sian author­i­ties have released Bel­sat jour­nal­ist Kat­siary­na Andreye­va, who was sen­tenced to 8 years impris­on­ment.     PEN Belarus, along with the human rights and cul­tur­al com­mu­ni­ty, strong­ly con­demns the cur­rent large-scale repres­sion tar­get­ing inde­pen­dent pub­lish­ers, book dis­trib­u­tors, and cul­tur­al organ­i­sa­tions in Belarus. These actions clear­ly aim to dis­man­tle the Belaru­sian pub­lish­ing infra­struc­ture and crim­i­nalise legit­i­mate cul­tur­al activ­i­ties.

    Min­sk City Court on March 6 announced a ver­dict for polit­i­cal pris­on­er and jour­nal­ist Pavel Dabravol­s­ki. He was con­vict­ed of “high trea­son”.

    Radio host and musician Aleh Khamenka sentenced to 3 years in prison

    On March 4, Min­sk City Court announced a ver­dict for musi­cian, researcher, and radio host Aleh Khamen­ka. He was found guilty of “facil­i­tat­ing extrem­ist activ­i­ties.”

    CPJ: Belarusian authorities should immediately release journalists Uladzimir Yanukevich and Andrei Pakalenka

    Belaru­sian court sen­tences 2 jour­nal­ists to 14, 12 years in prison, heavy fines. Belaru­sian author­i­ties should imme­di­ate­ly release jour­nal­ists Uladz­imir Yanuke­vich and Andrei Pakalen­ka, and stop jail­ing jour­nal­ists for their work, said the Com­mit­tee to Pro­tect Jour­nal­ists. 

    BAJ study reveals the urgent needs of freed Belarusian journalists

    Two former Intex-Press executives sentenced to lengthy prison terms

    On Feb­ru­ary 26, 2026, the Brest Region­al Court announced sen­tences for the for­mer heads of the Baranavichy news por­tal BAR24 and, pre­vi­ous­ly, the inde­pen­dent news­pa­per Intex-Press: Uladz­imir Yanuke­vich and Andrei Pakalen­ka.

    February 24: BAJ expresses solidarity and support for Ukrainian colleagues

    Rus­si­a’s full-scale war against Ukraine has been ongo­ing for four years. Accord­ing to BAJ part­ners at the Nation­al Union of Jour­nal­ists of Ukraine (NUJU), since the start of the full-scale inva­sion, Russ­ian aggres­sors have killed at least 144 media work­ers.
