    Journalist Alena Tsimashchuk faces trial in Brest: accused of discreditation, inciting hatred, and extremism

    The sched­ule of the Brest Region­al Court for May 31 indi­cat­ed that an indi­vid­ual named Ale­na Tsi­mashchuk would be tried on three charges: dis­cred­it­ing the Repub­lic of Belarus, incite­ment to hos­til­i­ty or dis­cord, and par­tic­i­pa­tion in an extrem­ist for­ma­tion.

    Ali­ak­san­dr Kornyshau, edi­tor of the online pub­li­ca­tion, has been resid­ing abroad since Novem­ber 2020. On May 23, law enforce­ment offi­cers searched for his place of reg­is­tra­tion in Vit­seb­sk. The apart­ment in ques­tion belongs to his par­ents, and the jour­nal­ist’s per­son­al belong­ings were not stored there.

    State media announces seizure of independent journalist’s apartment as “sanctions compensation”

    The apart­ment of Vit­seb­sk free­lance jour­nal­ist Dzmit­ry Kaza­ke­vich will be con­fis­cat­ed for the ben­e­fit of the state and sold as “com­pen­sa­tion for dam­age caused by sanc­tions”. This was claimed by pro­pa­gan­dist Ihar Tur in a May 20 pro­gram on state-run All-Nation­al TV.

    On May 17, law enforce­ment offi­cers con­duct­ed a search of the apart­ment in which Barys Haret­s­ki, deputy chair­man of the Belaru­sian Asso­ci­a­tion of Jour­nal­ists, is reg­is­tered in Min­sk. A crim­i­nal case has been opened against him, but the rea­son for this is not yet known.
