A photographer who previously worked for RFE/RL's Belarus Service has been arrested and taken to pretrial detention in Minsk, his relatives say.

The Nasha Niva newspaper has been published since 1906 (modern version – since 1991), now it is an online media outlet with popular social media pages. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus informed that Nasha Niva was recognized as an extremist formation: “The group of citizens from the Sarodzichy private association (the owner of Nasha Niva) united through online resources, including social media and messengers was recognized an extremist formation.”

On January 19, Belarusian writer and journalist Sevyaryn Kvyatkouski was detained.

In response to the sentencing of Belarusian journalist Aliaksandr Ivulin to two years imprisonment on Wednesday, the Committee to Protect Journalists issued the following statement of condemnation:

On January 19, the Savetski District Court of Minsk ruled in a criminal case against well-known journalist and Krumkachy football player Aliaksandr Ivulin.

Journalist Andrei Aliaksandrau and his partner campaigner Irina Zlobina have been behind bars since 12 January 2021, when they were detained and imprisoned for claiming their right to freedom of expression. On the anniversary of their detention, on 12 January 2022, ARTICLE 19 and Index on Censorship launched a campaign in solidarity and calling for their immediate and unconditional release.

In October-November 2021, the Belarusian Association of Journalists surveyed media representatives: those who remain in Belarus and those who were forced to leave the country. The purpose of the survey was to find out the most burning issues and needs of the Belarusian media sector today.

The case of Alyaksandr Ivulin, a journalist at the sports media outlet Tribuna and a football player of Krumkachy team, is starting to be heard on January 17 in Savetski district court of Minsk, tribuna.com reports. The defendant has been behind bars for about seven months.

He is accused of taking part in an unauthorized rally while being deprived of the journalist accreditation of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

MINSK -- Aleh Hruzdzilovich, a correspondent of RFE/RL's Belarus Service, has been seized and held by masked men who broke into his home in Minsk, a human rights organization reports in the latest crackdown on independent media in the authoritarian Eastern European state.
