Resolution of international conference ‘The Perspectives and Challenges to Freelance Journalism in Europe. A Special Focus on Belarus’

Conference "Prospects and Challenges for Freelance Journalism in Europe. A special focus on Belarus" took place in Minsk. The conference organized by Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) and International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is an opportunity to discuss the challenges faced by the professional community. Special focus was on Belarus, for its extremely challenging working conditions for journalists and putting freelance journalists beyond the framework of the law.

Four fines were imposed on freelance journalists in Minsk on October 30, 2017. Two of them - Aliaksandr Barazenka and Hanna Aziemsha – were punished for their freelance journalist work with fines of EUR 250 in equivalent per person. Two other journalists – Volha Chaychyts and Andrei Koziel – were harassed with huge fines of EUR 500 in equivalent per person in the same court room.

The director of ‘Belsat’ TV channel Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy noted during a meeting in Hrodna that ‘Belsat’ would survive and that the problem situation with its funding has been solved by now.

The 4th Belarusian Human Rights Defenders’ Forum took place in Vilnius on October 20-21, 2017. Representatives of 29 human rights organizations and civil initiatives from Belarus took part in the event.
