  • Belarusian Deputy Proposes To Create “Information Shield” Such As China’s

Marina Vasko, the member of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly on Education, Culture and Science, suggested creating an “information shield” in Belarus following the example of China, SB. Belarus Segondya reports.

The MP stated that “a certain part of young people and the Belarusian society, who had been exposed to the informational influence of destructive internet resources, took part in protest actions”. She added that “cyber threats are now the primary threat to our society”. According to Vasko, the state should create “an information shield that would resist cyber threats”. At the same time, it is proposed to follow an example of information security of China, particularly, the Great Firewall of China.

“What is the effect of the isolated development of the Chinese internet? The vast majority of users no longer need prohibited information, Western resources have ceased to interest people because the country has created its own full-fledged information ecosystem. It is both a communication and entertainment internet resource, a social network, and a search engine.

In parallel with the creation of such an ‘information shield’, we can develop our own patriotic content, train bloggers, and educate new opinion leaders. This is not a fast and very costly path, but, firstly, the successes in the development of the People’s Republic of China are obvious, and secondly, it will cost us more if we don’t do that,” said Vasko.

The Great Firewall of China is the combination of legislative actions and technologies enforced by the People’s Republic of China to regulate the Internet domestically. Its role in internet censorship in China is to block access to selected foreign websites and to slow down cross-border internet traffic. The effect includes: limiting access to foreign information sources, blocking foreign internet tools and mobile apps, and requiring foreign companies to adapt to domestic regulations.
