  • Prosecutor General’s Office in Belarus files $7 million lawsuit against Ihar Losik

    After his release, for­mer polit­i­cal pris­on­er Ihar Losik was hit with a law­suit from the Pros­e­cu­tor General’s Office of Belarus amount­ing to about $7 mil­lion, he report­ed on his Face­book page.

    “This is the amount that, between August 9 and Decem­ber 1, was paid out of the state bud­get to riot police offi­cers as bonus­es and over­time — when they were very dili­gent­ly beat­ing peo­ple. And now I’m sup­posed to return that mon­ey to the pub­lic purse,” Losik explained.

    Accord­ing to him, this is not the only claim: anoth­er law­suit seeks com­pen­sa­tion for bro­ken hand­cuffs, used stun grenades, and oth­er sim­i­lar “dam­ages.”

    Losik was detained on June 25, 2020, and sen­tenced to 15 years in prison. He was released on Sep­tem­ber 11, 2025, with the medi­a­tion of the Unit­ed States, and deport­ed to Lithua­nia.
