  • Journalist who photographed Russian military vehicles taken into custody

    Baranavichy journalist Yury Hantsarevich detained two weeks ago was charged with the facilitation of extremist activity and transferred to a remand prison, according to the sources of the Belarusian Association of Journalists.

    A week after Hantsarevich’s arrest, pro-gov­ern­ment pro­pa­gan­dist chan­nels aired a video of the his inter­ro­ga­tion and report­ed that the jour­nal­ist was detained for pho­tograph­ing Russ­ian mil­i­tary equip­ment and send­ing the images to the inde­pen­dent media Zerka­lo and RFE/RL Belarus.

    Since lead­ing Belaru­sian inde­pen­dent media had been rec­og­nized as “extrem­ist for­ma­tions,” the jour­nal­ist is now accused of assist­ing such “for­ma­tions.” Zerka­lo is an excep­tion so far.

    Yes­ter­day Yury Hantsare­vich was trans­ferred to Baranavichy remand prison #6. Accord­ing to the charges, the jour­nal­ist faces up to 6 years of impris­on­ment.
