  • Ivan Murauyou to be transferred to Babrujsk correctional facility after appeal

Relatives of convicted videographer Ivan Murauyou were informed about the designated facility in which he is going to serve his sentence.

January 11, Ivan Murauyou was transferred from Minsk pre-trial detention center to a remand prison in Mahiliou, where he is awaiting the consideration of his appeal. The convict’s transfer to Babrujsk correctional facility depends on the timely appointment of the date of the appeal hearing in the Supreme Court.

In his letters, the political prisoner writes that he has partially adapted to the realities of the “relocation base” over the past three weeks. Compared to the overcrowded Minsk detention center, the conditions in Mahiliou are better – there is more space in the cells and exercise yards. He tries to use his time productively: he reads a lot, educates his fellow inmates, and accumulates “interesting life experience.”

On 26 December 2022, Ivan was sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment in a closed trial. The case was related to the videographer’s video material meant for a journalist investigation of a corruption case broadcast on the Belsat TV channel. Murauyou was therefore convicted for participating in an extremist formation.
