  • Prosecutor General’s Office opens six criminal cases against Siarhei Dubavets, an RFE/RL employee

    As reported by Nasha Niva, he is accused of violating the law on countering extremism, preventing the rehabilitation of Nazism, and denying the genocide of the Belarusian people.

    Accord­ing to the case mate­ri­als, Siarhei Dubavets dis­sem­i­nat­ed false and destruc­tive infor­ma­tion about the polit­i­cal, eco­nom­ic, social, mil­i­tary, and inter­na­tion­al sit­u­a­tion of the Repub­lic of Belarus, as well as the legal sta­tus of its cit­i­zens in his pub­lic state­ments on the author’s blog.

    The jour­nal­ist has dis­cred­it­ed the Repub­lic of Belarus, state pow­er and admin­is­tra­tion, incit­ed social enmi­ty and hos­til­i­ty based on social group mem­ber­ship, dis­cussed the head of state, par­tic­i­pat­ed in extrem­ist for­ma­tions, and engaged in activ­i­ties aimed at reha­bil­i­tat­ing Nazism.

    Addi­tion­al­ly, he has denied the geno­cide of the Belaru­sian peo­ple dur­ing the Great Patri­ot­ic War and post-war peri­od, and tak­en pur­pose­ful actions to reha­bil­i­tate Nazism.

    Born in 1959 in Min­sk, Siarhei Dubavets par­tic­i­pat­ed in the nation­al revival move­ment in the 1980s. From 1991 to 2000, he served as the first edi­tor of the revived Nasha Niva pub­li­ca­tion.
